Today, we'll chat with Mahisha Dellinger of CURLS.  As a young girl growing up with her single mother in the projects, Mahisha witnessed the closeness of her community when there is love and grace. Through this upbringing, Mahisha built a personal and professional mantra of always growing with tenacity and reverence.

Mahisha began her career in marketing for Intel Corporation. It was there that she discovered her true passion in life: creating effective and eco-conscious products for natural, curly hair. Frustrated with the lack of products available, Mahisha worked to develop an award-winning line of organic hair care products and single-handedly built the demand for the CURLS brand.

A Q&A with Mahisha Dellinger

Q

How and why did you begin CURLS?

A

I founded CURLS back in 2002.  I was a newly natural mother that was searching for a natural option for her curly hair.  Back then, the options for textured hair was extremely limited. It was either chemical relaxers, perms, or hair grease products and I didn’t want any of that. I worked closely with leading cosmetic chemists to develop my award-winning brand that helps to empower women to embrace their natural hair textures.

Q

In the beginning, what were the biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

A

In the beginning, my biggest challenge was securing funding to launch my business. And there was a huge lack of access to the information and resources needed to be a successful entrepreneur. Now, it is my life’s purpose to give back and help those that are trying to achieve entrepreneurial success.

Q

What are some of your greatest successes in business and how do you believe you achieved them?

A

Our biggest win was securing the Target account.  That win caused our sales to grow by 1050% in the very first year. Target was eight years in the making and changed the trajectory of the company. We were on the cutting edge of the shift in philosophies of beauty on ethnic hair and it propelled me forward.

Q

For anyone who has an idea but doesn't know what steps to take or can't find the courage to make it a reality, what would you tell them?

A

It's important to create a path to success, and it must include a robust business and marketing plan. I always say, failing to plan is planning to fail. Don’t go it alone. Find a mentor in your industry ASAP - you’ll be surprised how much easier decision making is when you have a sounding board and an experienced guide to help you work through decisions.

Q

What are other brands and founders that you admire?

A

I admire Sara Blakelyfounder of Spanx. Wow - her vision, execution, and the brand’s cult following. She is my SHERO!
